Light Poetry with Doris Vila
A Rainbow Shadowgram Workshop
Class Description:
In this three hour course, students will learn how to use the technique of rainbow shadowsgrams to produce visual poetry by carving out images in a field of color and creating bright rainbows floating in space. Participants will use shadows, stencils, and found objects to make their own holograms which hold the key to a whole new world of perception and meaning. Doris Vila is a pioneer in the technique of shadowgrams, layering stories into holograms and holograms into stories. She works across media to play hide-and-seek with the boundaries of narrative and light. Vila has taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the School of Visual Arts, and SUNY Buffalo. She has held residencies at MIT Spectroscopy Lab, Kunsthochule für Medien (KHM) Köln, the Canadian Department of Mines and Resources, GMD (German national computing center), the MacDowell Colony, and Global Images Laboratories, among others. Based in Brooklyn, she exhibits internationally, lectures widely, and is a lifelong student of bird flocks. www.vilamedia.com
