Workshop: Make Your First DCG Hologram

A Hands-On Intro for Curious Creators

350 US dollars
East 2nd Street

Class Description:

Curious about how holograms _actually_ work? Step into the lab for a two-hour crash course in dichromated gelatin (DCG) holography—a wild, analog process that captures 3D lightfields on glass using nothing more than lasers, gelatin, and a bit of alchemy. This hands-on workshop is built for artists, makers, and experimenters. You’ll walk through the full process of making a single-layer reflection hologram—from raw glass plate to finished piece you can hold up to the light. We’ll cover: - Coating glass plates with light-sensitive emulsion (demo included) - Picking the right kind of subject to record—or bring your own object to try out - Exposing the plate using a 488nm laser - Developing your hologram through water and alcohol baths (smells like magic) - Sealing and finishing it for long-term display By the end, you’ll walk out with your very own handmade hologram—plus the know-how to care for it and a solid foundation if you want to keep exploring. **What to bring:** A small object (about 2"x3" max) if you’d like to try capturing your own subject, or pick from a batch of pre-selected ones I’ll have ready.
